International Systems

The United States is the only industrialized, first world country without some kind of universal insurance coverage and/or government provided healthcare. It is useful to survey some of our peer countries to see how their healthcare system is set up. This naturally leads to a discussion of whether the U.S. could adopt a model like some other country, or whether we can cherry pick features from several countries.

I will handout a worksheet where we can take notes about countries along the way.

In this week's session we will explore:

  • How countries finance healthcare - public, private, or a combination
  • The extent to which they have universal coverage or financing
  • How the providers are organized and paid
